MoonPay has expanded its payment services by adding Discover Network support for cryptocurrency purchases and sales in the United States. The update allows eligible Discover cardholders to buy and sell digital assets through MoonPay using another major U.S. payment network.

With this addition, Discover joins Visa and Mastercard, making it the third major card network supported by MoonPay. The company continues to strengthen its payment ecosystem by offering users more flexible ways to access cryptocurrencies.

Discover Becomes MoonPay’s Third Major Card Network

MoonPay already supports several popular payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Venmo, bank transfers, and various regional payment systems. The integration of Discover Network gives U.S. customers another trusted option for completing crypto transactions.

Although Discover has had fewer partnerships with crypto companies than Visa and Mastercard, its inclusion on MoonPay represents another step toward broader digital asset adoption.

Eligible Discover Cards Can Now Be Used for Crypto Transactions

The new integration enables users with eligible Discover Network cards to purchase and sell cryptocurrencies directly through MoonPay. However, card availability still depends on the policies of the issuing bank.

Some financial institutions may restrict crypto-related transactions, meaning not every Discover card will automatically support digital asset purchases.

Richard Harrison, Vice President of Banking and Payments Partnerships at MoonPay, said the company aims to remove barriers during checkout. He explained that MoonPay is focused on making crypto payments as simple as everyday online purchases by supporting the payment methods consumers already use.

Discover Strengthens Its Position in Digital Payments

Unlike Visa and Mastercard, Discover has maintained a relatively smaller presence in the cryptocurrency industry. While Discover cards are accepted on certain crypto platforms, including CEX.IO and services connected to BitPay, MoonPay’s announcement specifically relates to support for the Discover Network payment rail that processes transactions between merchants and cardholders.

The move expands Discover’s role in the growing digital asset economy.

MoonPay Continues Global Expansion

Founded in 2019, MoonPay provides infrastructure that allows users to move funds between traditional currencies and digital assets. The company says it now serves more than 30 million customers worldwide and supports over 500 enterprise clients across the crypto and fintech industries.

MoonPay has also expanded into artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, the company introduced MoonPay Agents, a non-custodial infrastructure platform that enables AI agents to create crypto wallets and complete blockchain transactions autonomously.

Strong Financial Backing Supports Future Growth

MoonPay has attracted investment from major firms, including Tiger Global Management and Coatue, along with celebrity investors such as Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton. In 2021, the company raised $555 million in a Series A funding round, reaching a valuation of $3.4 billion.

The company also secured a $200 million revolving credit facility from Galaxy last year. MoonPay reported that it finished 2024 as a cash flow positive and profitable business, with net revenue increasing 112% year over year.

Conclusion

MoonPay’s integration of Discover Network gives U.S. users another convenient way to buy and sell cryptocurrencies. By expanding payment choices beyond Visa and Mastercard, the company continues to improve accessibility while supporting the broader adoption of digital assets across the United States.
