A Los Angeles County Superior Court jury convicted Eric Halem, a 38-year-old former Los Angeles Police Department officer, of kidnapping and robbery for stealing $350,000 worth of Bitcoin from a 17-year-old during a 2024 home invasion, per the Los Angeles Times.
The two-week trial detailed how Halem and three accomplices posed as police officers to gain entry to the victim’s high-rise apartment in Koreatown. They used LAPD-issued handcuffs to restrain the teenager’s girlfriend, subdued the victim (who testified under the name Daniel), and demanded the hard drive containing the Bitcoin after threatening his life.
Halem’s attorney, Megan Maitia, argued in closing that the teenager admitted to obtaining the crypto through fraud, though this did not change the robbery/kidnapping charges.
Halem served 13 years with the LAPD and left the department in 2022. At the time of the robbery, he was still a reserve officer and was running a car rental business (DriveLA), developing an app for actors, and exploring a reality TV show about his life.
He was first charged in August 2025. Sentencing is scheduled for March 31, 2026.
Halem’s three co-defendants have not yet stood trial. Prosecutors allege one of them has ties to the so-called “Israeli mafia”.
The case highlights the intersection of traditional crime and cryptocurrency, with the stolen Bitcoin valued at $350,000 at the time of the robbery.
Bitcoin traded near $113,000 (stable amid broader market corrections), per CoinMarketCap. The incident serves as a reminder of physical security risks associated with self-custody of high-value crypto assets.
