EIP-8363 Staking Reward Burn Pulled from Hegota

The co-authors of EIP-8363 have withdrawn the staking reward burn proposal from Ethereum’s Hegota upgrade. Co-author Jérôme de Tychey, president of Ethereum France, announced the decision on Thursday. Industry feedback convinced the team that a major issuance change needs its own dedicated process.

Separate Process Planned Through EthCC in April

De Tychey outlined a multi-step timeline starting with an issuance forum at Devcon in November. Workshops will follow in the months ahead, ending with a final forum at EthCC in April. Liquid staking protocol Lido has offered to help guide the separate process.

Why the Proposal Faced Strong Pushback

Core contributors and industry participants argued that a fork scoping exercise was the wrong place to decide issuance policy. The authors agreed and chose to step back rather than continue toward Hegota. EIP-8363 had become one of the most discussed proposals on the Ethereum Magicians forum.

Original Goals of the Tapered Issuance Burn

The proposal aimed to burn a rising share of validator rewards as more ETH is staked. The burn rate would reach 100% near 60 million ETH, or about half the supply. Authors still support the core idea that a very high staking ratio could threaten Ethereum’s security and neutrality.
