Block Inc., the company behind Cash App, has agreed to pay $45 million to settle allegations from regulators in nearly all 50 U.S. states. Authorities claimed the company misled users about Cash App’s security and failed to provide adequate protection against fraud. The settlement follows a multistate investigation led by the New York Attorney General’s Office.
According to regulators, Block promoted Cash App as offering security protections similar to those of traditional banks. Officials argued that these claims gave customers the impression that their money was protected in the same way as funds held in bank accounts. Investigators also alleged that the company lacked an effective fraud detection system and failed to provide a reliable customer support hotline for users reporting scams.
The investigation found that Block was aware of increasing fraud on the platform but continued promoting Cash App without warning users. Regulators also criticized the company’s “Cash App Friday” social media campaign, where users shared their app usernames to enter prize giveaways. According to the complaint, scammers used these public posts to impersonate Cash App representatives and steal customer login details. Authorities claimed the company knew about these scams but continued running the promotion.
As part of the agreement, Block must improve its fraud response and customer support services. The company is required to provide 24/7 live customer support, strengthen complaint resolution processes, and stop making misleading claims about Cash App’s security. These measures are intended to improve user protection and reduce future fraud risks.
Although Block agreed to the settlement, the company denied any wrongdoing. A company spokesperson described the case as a legacy matter related to earlier business practices. Block also said it has invested heavily in customer protection, compliance, and fraud prevention technologies. The company stated that it remains committed to providing a safer financial platform for the millions of people who use Cash App.
