Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson believes Bitcoin could lose its position as the world’s largest cryptocurrency if it fails to respond effectively to the growing threat of quantum computing. Speaking during The Starting Block interview, Hoskinson said Bitcoin’s biggest challenge is not only the technology itself but also the network’s ability to agree on critical upgrades. He argued that slow governance could leave Bitcoin vulnerable as quantum computing continues to advance.
According to Hoskinson, Bitcoin’s conservative development approach has made the network highly secure but also difficult to upgrade. He explained that changing Bitcoin’s protocol requires broad community agreement, making major improvements slow and challenging. Hoskinson added that these limitations were among the reasons that inspired the creation of Ethereum, where he was one of the original co-founders alongside Vitalik Buterin.
Hoskinson said Cardano was designed to preserve Bitcoin’s core principles while offering a more flexible governance model. He believes Cardano can respond more quickly to emerging technical challenges through its formal onchain voting system. If quantum-resistant upgrades become necessary, the Cardano community could vote on the changes and implement them through an organized network upgrade, he explained.
The Cardano founder warned that quantum computing represents one of the biggest long-term threats facing the cryptocurrency industry. He said Bitcoin has survived many challenges throughout its history, including the disappearance of its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. However, he believes the network’s ability to adapt to future technological risks will determine whether it can maintain its leadership in the digital asset market.
Hoskinson also revealed that Cardano is preparing for what he described as its largest upgrade to date. He said the update is expected to make the blockchain up to 60 times faster, significantly improving network performance. According to Hoskinson, the upcoming upgrade highlights Cardano’s focus on continuous innovation and its readiness to address future technological challenges, including the rise of quantum computing.
