Farcaster, the decentralized social network once seen as a promising alternative to traditional platforms, is changing hands again—and this time the shift comes with stricter rules, AI moderation, and a controversial “social smart contract.”
Less than nine months after Neynar acquired Farcaster from its original developer Merkle Manufactory, the platform is being transferred to Balaji Srinivasan’s Network School. The move, announced in mid-October 2026, positions Farcaster as the foundation for something far more ambitious: the Network State Protocol.
According to an in-app announcement, Farcaster will now operate under the Network State Protocol. The stated goal is to help online communities evolve into real-world, opt-in societies that eventually take physical form. In plain terms, the platform wants to turn digital groups into something more lasting and tangible.
Neynar co-founder Rish explained that Farcaster needed a different operating model for its next stage. He and fellow co-founder Manan are stepping away, while other Neynar team members will join Network School to keep building the product. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Interestingly, Neynar’s earlier acquisition also included the token launchpad Clanker. Rish’s statement did not clarify Clanker’s future, though community streamers noted he was exploring the possibility of separating it and finding another buyer.
The biggest change for users is the introduction of a “social smart contract.” When opening the app, people are asked to accept or decline a new set of rules governing their posts and behavior.
Those who accept receive an access NFT recorded onchain, confirming their agreement. Those who decline keep read-only access through the main app. Their keys, funds, followers, and post history are then migrated to another client.
The rules define certain actions as “digital felonies.” These include hate speech, death threats, scams, repeatedly starting fights, stalking other users, and presenting AI-generated content as original human writing. The platform plans to use AI moderation and will gradually require users to prove they are human in an effort to reduce bot activity.
The transition has already created friction. Several users on X reported being banned for posts made at least three months earlier. The flagged content allegedly touched on topics including Elon Musk, Flock cameras, and “gay appreciation.” Independent verification of every claim is still limited, but the reports have fueled discussion about how the new moderation standards will be applied retroactively.
Farcaster’s second ownership change in under a year highlights the ongoing challenges of sustaining decentralized social networks. Neynar’s relatively short tenure suggests that building a profitable, engaged, and scalable platform remains difficult even with experienced teams.
Network School’s involvement brings a clear ideological direction. Balaji Srinivasan has long advocated for network states—digital-first communities that can eventually form physical territories. Turning Farcaster into the Network State Protocol aligns the product with that vision, but it also raises questions about how much control and moderation a once-decentralized network should introduce.
For everyday users, the practical impact is straightforward: participate under the new rules and retain full access, or step back into a limited experience. The access NFT creates a clear onchain record of consent, which may appeal to those who value verifiable agreements, while others may see it as an added layer of friction.
As the transition continues, key questions remain. How strictly will AI moderation be enforced? Will the human-verification requirement effectively curb bots without alienating legitimate users? And what happens to Clanker and other related products?
For now, Farcaster’s future is tied to Network School’s broader experiment in building opt-in digital societies. Whether the social smart contract strengthens the community or drives users away will become clearer in the coming months.
