Coinbase Seeks SEC Approval for 24/7 Equity Perpetuals

Coinbase is pushing to list equity perpetual contracts that trade around the clock. The largest U.S. crypto exchange filed a notice registration form with the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this week. Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad shared the news on Thursday. He said equity perps already show strong demand overseas. Coinbase wants a clear regulated path for U.S. investors.
Next Step Requires CFTC Approval
After SEC review, Coinbase still needs the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to sign off. The exchange already launched perpetual futures in March for customers outside the United States. Those contracts cover major stocks such as Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Amazon. Perpetuals are futures contracts with no expiration date. Traders can bet on price moves without owning the underlying shares.
Growing Interest in Regulated Perps
Most perpetual trading still happens on offshore platforms that lack U.S. oversight. In May the CFTC allowed bitcoin perpetual futures to list in the United States. Staff approved both KalshiEX and Coinbase for those products. A month later the agency asked for public comments on crude oil perpetuals and continuous 24/7 trading. Regulators appear open to expanding these markets under clear rules.
Hyperliquid Draws Political Attention
Hyperliquid has become a popular destination for crypto derivatives traders. Last month President Donald Trump noted that CFTC Chair Michael Selig is working to bring the platform into the U.S. in a fully compliant way. Reports also show Hyperliquid Labs is exploring an onshore path through a possible deal with Payward, the parent company of crypto exchange Kraken.
