Coinbase is expanding its AI-powered payment services by allowing businesses to accept payments directly from AI agents. The new feature is part of Coinbase Business and is designed to help companies participate in the growing agentic economy, where autonomous AI systems can complete transactions without human involvement.

The company announced the new capability as Coinbase Business celebrated its first anniversary, marking another step in its long-term investment in artificial intelligence and blockchain technology.

New Payment System Powered by Coinbase Payments

The new solution is built on Coinbase Payments and uses the x402 open internet payments standard, an open protocol developed by Coinbase to support machine-to-machine transactions.

According to Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, companies already selling products and services through Coinbase Business can now also accept payments from AI agents. Businesses do not need to create a separate payment system, as AI transactions will operate alongside existing customer payments.

The x402 standard enables AI agents to communicate with merchants, complete purchases, and move on to the next task without manual intervention.

Coinbase Business Reaches Major Growth Milestone

Coinbase Business officially launched in June 2025. Since then, the platform has attracted approximately 5,000 business customers and processed nearly $1 billion in combined payments and trading volume.

The business unit has also expanded its internal team as demand for crypto payment infrastructure continues to grow.

Coelho-Prabhu, who has spent nearly nine years at Coinbase and previously led the development of Coinbase Wallet, said AI-powered payments remain one of the company’s highest-priority investments.

Coinbase Doubles Down on AI Strategy

Coinbase believes AI-driven commerce will become one of the internet’s biggest technological shifts. The company said it began investing in AI infrastructure several years ago after recognizing the long-term potential of autonomous digital transactions.

As part of this strategy, Coinbase also introduced Coinbase for Agents, a platform that allows developers to connect AI systems with crypto trading and payment tools. In addition, the company released a software development kit (SDK) that makes it easier for websites and applications to integrate x402 payment support.

AI Tools Continue Expanding Across Coinbase

Beyond payment infrastructure, Coinbase continues to launch AI-focused products across its ecosystem. One of its latest offerings is Coinbase Advisor, an AI-powered financial advisory platform registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The service is designed to provide users with personalized investment insights, market analysis, and financial guidance using artificial intelligence.

AI Agents Are Already Making Real Business Payments

Although AI-powered commerce is still in its early stages, Coinbase says adoption is steadily increasing. The company reported that 53% of traffic to the Base blockchain documentation in June came from AI agents rather than human users.

Coinbase also confirmed that AI agents are already completing real-world transactions for businesses operating in the digital infrastructure sector. These agents are purchasing services such as OpenRouter credits, domain names, and cloud computing resources from providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud.

According to Coinbase, these businesses represent the first wave of AI-driven commerce, with broader consumer adoption expected in the near future.

Coinbase Sees Strong Future for Agentic Commerce

The company believes it has now built a complete ecosystem for AI-powered payments. AI agents can discover Coinbase developer tools, create digital wallets, receive funding, pay merchants through Coinbase Business, and settle transactions using USDC on Base or other supported blockchain networks.

Coinbase expects this infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of autonomous AI payments across multiple industries.

Conclusion

Coinbase’s latest AI payment expansion highlights its commitment to building the future of autonomous digital commerce. By enabling businesses to accept payments from AI agents, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of the emerging agentic economy. As AI adoption continues to grow, Coinbase expects machine-to-machine transactions to become an increasingly important part of global digital payments.
