Colombian President Gustavo Petro Wants Caribbean to Become Bitcoin Mining Hub
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has proposed turning the Caribbean region into a major Bitcoin mining center to boost economic development.
Petro’s Vision for Bitcoin Mining
In a post on X, President Petro highlighted Bitcoin mining as a way to bring significant investment and growth to cities like Santa Marta, Riohacha, and Barranquilla. He pointed to the success of neighboring countries Venezuela and Paraguay, which have attracted Bitcoin mining using clean energy resources.
Focus on Local Community Involvement
Petro called for direct discussions with the indigenous Wayúu community in northern Colombia. He wants the local people to actively participate in and benefit from the Bitcoin mining project.
Colombia’s Strong Renewable Energy Advantage
Colombia has vast renewable energy potential, mainly from hydropower, along with growing solar and wind capacity. As of late 2025, the country had over 21,000 megawatts of renewable energy capacity, making it well-positioned for energy-intensive Bitcoin mining operations.
