X Officially Launches XChat, Ushering in a New Standard for Encrypted Messaging Inspired by Bitcoin

Elon Musk announces XChat with Bitcoin-inspired encryption on X platform, signaling a shift in secure messaging

With the launch of XChat, a cutting-edge feature made available on June 2, 2025, on the platform X, Elon Musk has once again drawn attention in the tech and cryptocurrency communities. According to Wu Blockchain, XChat brings a suite of advanced privacy tools—ranging from encrypted messaging and disappearing texts to support for all file types, along with audio and video calling. Developed using Rust and powered by Bitcoin-style encryption, the new addition positions X as a strong contender in the race to become a comprehensive “everything app,” much like China’s WeChat.

Rust was intentionally selected for its high-performance capabilities and memory safety, ensuring XChat delivers a secure and reliable user experience. The phrase “Bitcoin-style encryption” likely references elliptic-curve cryptography (ECC), a system also used by Bitcoin’s ECDSA protocol, which enables secure transactions with smaller, more efficient keys compared to older systems such as RSA.

ECC’s complexity, which provides high-level defense against assaults using classical computation, is one of its main advantages. However, with rapid progress in quantum computing, concerns have emerged around ECC’s long-term resilience. For example, a 960-qubit quantum machine could potentially break 160-bit ECC, while cracking a 1024-bit RSA key would demand 2051 qubits. This has led to growing discussions about the need to future-proof XChat’s encryption as the technology landscape continues to evolve.

Musk’s vision for XChat reflects his ongoing commitment to strengthening privacy features on the X platform, building on prior initiatives such as encrypted DMs for premium users launched in 2023. The debut of this feature has already stirred significant attention across the X community, where discussions about $XChat tokens and potential promotional strategies by Musk are gaining momentum. Influencers like Crypto Emre have forecasted a spike in interest surrounding the $𝕏Chat ticker, citing its strong branding appeal. Meanwhile, voices like Alva are calling for caution, urging users to “wait for audits” before diving into the hype.

As XChat continues its rollout, its integration of ECC-based architecture and advanced privacy capabilities places it among the frontrunners in the secure messaging space. However, with growing concerns around quantum vulnerability, cryptography experts are keeping a close eye on its long-term resilience. The question remains—will XChat set a new benchmark for privacy in social media, or will it need to adapt further to withstand the challenges posed by emerging technologies? The answer, for now, lies in the future.
