A federal jury in Wisconsin convicted Joseph E. Johnson Jr. and Candice V. Cunningham on March 11, 2026, after a four-day trial that began February 23, 2026. Both defendants were found guilty on all eight counts: one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and seven substantive counts of mail fraud.

Johnson and Cunningham were indicted in 2023 on the eight mail-fraud-related counts. Both were arrested on March 22, 2023, and entered not-guilty pleas at their March 29 arraignment.
After nearly three years of pre-trial proceedings, the case proceeded to trial in late February 2026. The jury deliberated and returned guilty verdicts on all counts by March 11.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 23, 2026. Each defendant faces a statutory maximum of 20 years imprisonment per count of mail fraud (7 counts each) plus an additional 20 years on the conspiracy count, although actual sentences are expected to be far lower under federal sentencing guidelines.
Restitution to victims and forfeiture of proceeds will also be addressed at sentencing.
