Officially, Tupperware has ceased operations in Belgium.
According to HLN’s January 13th report, Tupperware’s US leadership have approved the company’s bankruptcy filing.
Tupperware filed for bankruptcy in Belgium after closing a local Aalst manufacturing a few months before. Tupperware hadn’t made a public announcement about the closing until bankruptcy permission.
The decision to close the Belgian operations has now been approved by [US executives].
Dates for the next phases in the bankruptcy process are not yet known. However, the works council has approved the request to petition the court to designate a curator.
The 270 employees’ severance benefits will be covered by the funds donated.
According to reports, some of Tupperware’s Belgian employees have been employed there “for decades.”
Tupperware General Services, a smaller Tupperware company in Belgium, has also been shut down.
The situation is significantly worse for the employees of Tupperware General Services. It is unlikely that they will all be paid in full for their severance. The news organization “Belga” reported this via union sources.
According to reports, Tupperware General Services employs around fifty people.
In September 2024, Tupperware declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States.
Tupperware was sold to a consortium of hedge funds who specialize in boosting profits while decreasing costs in October 2024.
